CentralNic gets its foot in the door as Famous Four back-end

[February 18, 2014] New gTLD portfolio applicant Famous Four Media has selected CentralNic to provide back-end registry services, joining existing providers ARI Registry Services and Neustar.

CentralNic will be “a preferred provider” of Domain Venture Partners, which is the parent company of Famous Four’s 60 new gTLD applicants, according to a joint statement issued by the companies today.

Neither firm wanted to give any firm details about how CentralNic fits into Famous Four’s strategy, such as whether CentralNic might replace existing back-ends as it did with 27 formerly GMO Registry bids.

Famous Four is already partnered with Neustar on 52 new gTLD applications and ARI on five more.

DVP chief operating officer Charles Melvin told DI in a statement:

“CentralNic will sit as one of our preferred backend technology partners. We are in the process of agreeing terms with a limited number of select providers to sit on our preferred panel. Until such agreements have been put in place it would be inappropriate for us to comment on them.”

The deal is related to DVP II, an investment vehicle through which DVP hopes to raise up to $400 million “to acquire Top-Level Domain registries, some of which are already live.”

We were leaked a copy of a June 2013 investor presentation related to DVP II, in which the company said its back-end partner had “the lowest fees in the industry”.

With its new “preferred panel”, it looks like the company is hedging its bets.

[February 18, 2014] Registry service CentralNic has combined with Domain Venture Partners (DVP) to manage new and existing generic top-level domains (gTLDs).

The partnership, announced today, February 18, has been set up by DVP, an investment company.

Under the partnership, CentralNic will provide registry services for and manage DVP’s acquired gTLDs, some of which are already live.

Ben Crawford, chief executive at CentralNic, said the partnership presented a “fantastic new opportunity” for the company.

“This agreement not only fits well with our stated strategy to increase the inventory of gTLDs carried by our platform, but also confirms CentralNic’s position as market leader in providing registry services.”

Charles Melvin, chief operating officer at DVP, said the company had been “impressed” by CentralNic’s experience in operating registry back-end services as well as its ability to market and distribute domain names in a “strategic and creative” manner.

Antony Gold, partner at Harrison Goddard Foote LLP in London, said the partnership may be of “little concern” to potential registrars.

“The ownership and day-to-day operations behind a registry is not really a matter of interest to most Internet users,” said Gold.

“The primary concern would be an assurance that there are effective ways of tackling abuse and fraud. Who owns and runs a domain is not usually where the issues arise.”

Gold added that it remained an “open question” as to what impact the influx of new gTLDs would have on consumers and registrars.

“In the past we have seen domain names including .biz and .info launch, each time people have been told that it’s going to re-brand the Internet and it’s not happened.

“The stranglehold of .com has meant new domain names have never had much traction, as .com or .co.uk have always been the trusted domains.”

[February 18, 2014] LONDON (Alliance News) – CentralNic PLC said Tuesday that it had inked an agreement with Domain Venture Partners to act as a registry service provider for Domain Venture Partners’ investment fund DVP II.

Under the agreement CentralNic’s platform will be used to buy new web addresses using top-level domain registries owned by the investment trust.

A top level domain name is the suffix of an internet address such as .com or .net which are designated to approved organisations by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Up until now, ICAAN only allowed a small number of domains such as .com, .org and .gov. However, a change in rules means that a slew of new domain names can be launched.

Domain Venture Partners created DVP II to acquire new top-level domain registries that are becoming available. Domain Venture Partners has invested in 60 companies that applied for licenses for these new domains, CentralNic said.

Last Monday CentralNic appointed Glenn Hayward as its new financial officer. Hayward joined CentralNic from Nominet, the company responsible for the .uk internet domain.

Shares in CentralNic were trading down 0.6% at 82.00 pence Tuesday morning.
